DJ Profile: Bob Guyette
Broadcasting from the campus of Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts, Bob Guyette is no stranger to polka radio. The man behind the airwaves had a few interesting tidbits from his career to share.
TPN: How did you get started in polka radio?
BG: "In 1964 I went to a polka dance and loved it. I even met my wife at a polka dance and then started taking my son. While my son Jeff was a freshman at Nichols College, he and I started our own radio show. Jeff and I were always close and the music brought us closer over the years. Over time, it just evolved.
TPN: What is your favorite part about being a polka DJ?
BG: Playing music that makes people happy even when they're down. Also, reaching the young people especially here at the college. After hearing some polkas they realize it's not only Roll Out the Barrel and In Heaven There Is No Beer, but songs that tell stories. If that makes one person happy who happens to be depressed that day, it makes me happy.
TPN: Do you have a particular fond memory from your years as a polka DJ?
BG: One day a lady who listened online in Amarillo was visiting relatives here in Massachusetts. She was a quadriplegic and loved polka. She paid the cab driver $50 to carry her up to the third floor where my polka show is broadcasted. I was awed by her determination to see me. I have to say I broke down and cried.
TPN: Do you feel it's important to keep polka music alive by broadcasting it on the radio?
BG: Yes. I feel that people who have followed polka music all their lives along with its heritage must be able to continue and of course pass it on to the next generation. They must also be able to introduce the music to a younger audience.
TPN: How do you feel about your show being online?
BG: Feels great! I can now reach an audience I could never reach before. Now I am able to reach people who aren't able to pick up my show on a regular radio. I've also made quite a bit of e-mail friends. I've even met people from Canada to Florida. It's a great rush hearing from listeners from all over the place every week. Plus I am playing what they want to hear and giving them a variety that they couldn't hear on traditional radio.
The Bob Guyette Polka Show airs Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8:30 pm at wrnc.nichols.edu.
