Celebrating National Polka Month Czech-Mex Style
The International Polka Association (IPA) has the roots of southern polka spread this January 18th at the Martinez Social Club near San Antonio. This historic dance hall/ bowling alley will be the location of the 5th Annual IPA Texas fundraiser dance on the third Saturday evening of National Polka Month. The music will be a showcase by Mark Halata with Texavia, and Max Baca with Los Texmaniacs.
For the last 75 years polka music in Texas has always been a blend of German, Czech, and Mexican cultures. In the mid-1800s, the Germans and Austrians brought over accordions and beer brewing knowledge to Mexico. The intermingling of the cultures produced a new style of music. The movement of the cultures between Mexico and Texas spread the yet unnamed sound northward into Texas.
