Million Dollar Quartet; A Golden Jam Session
December 4, 1956 marked an important date in musical history. On that day, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins all got together at Sun Records in Memphis and had a jam session. However, this legendary musical meeting of the minds was a complete accident.
After touring for the majority of the year, Elvis finally had some down time in December 1956 and decided to return home to Memphis to spend time with his mother and father (Gladys and Vernon Presley). One day while Elvis was sitting around at the family home on Audubon Drive (Elvis didn't purchase Graceland until one year later) he decided to visit his old stomping grounds where it all began for him. That place was none other than Sun Records.
Elvis had been signed to the label for a year and half and then in late 1955, Sam Phillips had sold Elvis' contract to RCA records for a whopping $35,000! Once Elvis signed with RCA, his superstar status began.
